Burning firewood that keeps your flue cleaner
Choose the right firewood to help maintain a cleaner chimney flue.
Choosing the Right Type of Firewood
Selecting the appropriate firewood is crucial for maintaining a cleaner flue. Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and birch burn hotter and longer, producing less creosote compared to softwoods. This results in less buildup in your chimney.
Avoid burning softwoods like pine, which can quickly deposit creosote due to their sap content. The dense nature of hardwoods ensures a cleaner and more efficient burn, reducing the frequency of chimney cleaning needed.
Properly Seasoned Firewood
Using seasoned firewood is essential as it has a lower moisture content, which leads to fewer emissions and creosote deposits. Firewood should be dried for at least six months, with an ideal moisture content of 20% or less.
Store your firewood in a dry, ventilated area off the ground to expedite the drying process. Covering the top with a tarp while leaving the sides open will allow airflow, keeping the wood dry and ready to burn efficiently.
Avoiding Treated Wood and Debris
Only burn natural, untreated wood in your fireplace to prevent dangerous chemicals from entering your home and creating additional residue in your flue. Burning painted, stained, or treated wood can release toxins that are harmful to both health and the environment.
Also, refrain from burning household trash or cardboard in your fireplace. These materials can lead to excessive ash and residue, complicating chimney maintenance and potentially causing harmful emissions.
